The sun had well set by the time I about-faced from the Covid Memorial Wall and headed toward the London Eye and beyond. The Southbank was wall-to-wall people and it was fun to include myself with the masses engaging in an English passegiatta1
Thanks so much for taking this very long walk with me in London the day after Christmas, Boxing Day, 2023! I think I clocked fifteen miles that day which is really not that difficult to do in this city. The next day, though, there wasn’t much walking or movement of any kind…
I think I’ll include more of these photo walks/photo essays in the future. I like how, with minimal commentary, they allow you, the reader/viewer, to form your own impressions and opinions about what you’re seeing. And, frankly, street photography is a great love of mine. We discover so much when we’re out on foot.
Thank you for joining me on this walk through one of my very favorite cities! The Lightshare Letters is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, please consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. Thanks again!
Passegiatta is an Italian pastime popular in many cities in Italy especially in the Southern areas of the country. My daughter and I took part in one in Siena in Tuscany one Christmas. A passegiatta is essentially a leisurely stroll, usually after dinner, where the only real aim is to enjoy yourself and those around you. This part of the walk on the Southbank was exactly that for the majority of the people out and about, I think!
Wow, what an adventure. The photos you took are amazing and the descriptions of each make me feel like I am there with you. I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!
Loved, loved, loved the photos, the “walk” (I can’t count your steps for me?), the education… all of it!
